Åland has so many islands that even the locals haven’t explored them all. In total, there are around 6,700 islands and islets scattered in the archipelago. How many can you discover in a single day?
Kumlinge from north to south
Kumlinge consists of the main islands Kumlinge, Enklinge, Seglinge and Björkö. All with unique nature and character, from coniferous forests on northern Enklinge to lush hazel groves on southern Seglinge. Nature is always close by – you can explore marked hiking trails, take a kayak trip or fish from a boat in all seasons.
A magical island
In Kökar, the fascinating island of Källskär beckons with interesting ice-age formations and unexpected environments created by Baron Göran Åkerhielm in the 1960s. He loved hosting guests, one of the most famous being the author and artist Tove Jansson. During the high season, guided tours depart daily from Hotel Brudhäll.
A harbour stop in Sottunga
The harbour in Sottunga is a lovely meeting place, whether you arrive by archipelago ferry or your own boat. Enjoy a visit to the summer restaurant Salteriet, known for its Wiener schnitzel, and stay at Strandhugget B&B. You can also enjoy a round of disc golf, borrow a bike or take a dip in the sea.
Culture in large and small doses
Vårdö author Anni Blomqvist's novels about Stormskär's Maja were revived as a film last year. On the island of Simskäla, you can visit her author's home Strömmen. In Vargata you will find Åland's smallest museum, an old telephone booth with an exhibition on the history of the tele communications.
