Beaches and nature close to the town

Ever since Mariehamn was founded in 1861, green areas for rest and recreation have been an important part of the townscape.

Within walking distance, you have four sandy beaches to choose from – all located along the eastern side of the town.

Lilla holmen

Closest to the centre is Lilla holmen, a beach and recreational area. The family-friendly sandy beach is just as popular for sunbathing on warm summer days as it is for brave winter swimmers.

In summer, there is an ice cream kiosk as well as access to toilets and changing rooms. The beach is also accessible, with a ramp into the water, a spacious changing cabin and the possibility to borrow a beach wheelchair from June to August.

For those who want to be active, there are balance trails, obstacle courses, a climbing ship, swings and games to borrow. You can also visit chickens,  peacocks and rabbits.

Nabben beach

Furthest north is the town’s largest beach. It is child-friendly with shallow water and a bathing raft. A newly built playground is located at the beach. In summer, there is an ice cream kiosk as well as access to toilets and changing rooms.

Mariebad beach

Near the Maritime Quarter, you’ll find the Mariebad swimming centre. In summer, the beach is open to the public. The swimming centre has a café serving food.

Gröna Udden

South of the natural area Tullarns äng, there is a beach managed by Gröna Uddens Camping. The area also offers a summer café, mini golf and a sauna.
