Discovering Åland from the saddle of a bike is just as wonderful as from the water. Rent a kayak or bike and set off among islands, skerries and red granite roads.
Out on the water, it's the sea that shows the way. There’s everything from calm bays for beginners to more challenging routes in the outer archipelago, with plenty of opportunities to pull ashore for a cooling swim – preferably with an experienced kayaking partner or guide.
For beginners, we recommend Paddelboden's courses or a guided tour amidst the islands south of Mariehamn or to Kobba Klintar. New for this year are tours where you pre-book a kayak spot, and then the weather and wind determine the best starting point. A dense archipelago with many small islands and calm waters for beginners can also be found on Föglö. A shorter trip around Mellanön in Eckerö is also a tip! For experienced paddlers looking for a challenge, there is the North Sea route, from Käringsund in the west to Jurmo in the east.
You can rent kayaks in Åland. The kayaks can be transported to your chosen starting point and picked up at the end of your tour, as long as there’s road access.
Cycling holidays
With cycle-friendly roads, quiet traffic and beautiful nature, Åland is made for cycling. Rent a bike for the day or set off on a longer excursion. The Åland Archipelago Trail is a great option – the distances are just right and the tour through the archipelago offers great stops for food, accommodation and a dip in the sea.
Another nice scenic route is from Mariehamn to Snäckö in Geta where you can catch the Silvana bicycle ferry to Skarpnåtö in Hammarland. Or vice versa.
