Wooden churches in Åland

The wooden churches that were built in Lumparland's, Sottunga's and Brändö's chapel parishes after the reformation all have medieval predecessors.

It is also possible that simple wooden churches were the predecessors of the stone churches of Åland. In some cases the remains of these early wooden churches have been found during archaeological excavations.

Today the whitewashed chapel church of Lumparland, with its splendid view across Kapellviken, is a fine outing destination. Here you can admire the beautifully decorated balcony from 1760.
