Take a scenic archipelago tour to Vårdö. The locals call it an “enchanted island”, which is easy to understand once you’ve explored Vårdö’s beautiful nature and abundance of activities.
Vårdö is one of Åland’s six archipelago municipalities, but only within a 10-minute cable ferry ride from the main island. Here you’ll find many experiences waiting for you, with culture and literature always present. Author Anni Blomqvist who wrote the novel series “Stormskerry Maja” and Sally Salminen, famous for her internationally renowned novel “Katrina”, were both from Vårdö. You can visit Anni Blomqvist’s home Strömmen on the island of Simskäla.
Vårdö has several small museums. Visit Åland’s School Museum, Wennström’s General Store with a museum, Lasse Eriksson’s Ship Museum, as well as the local homestead museums of Erkas and Seffers. In the old telephone booth in Vargata, there’s a mini-exhibition on local telephone history. Next door, Kittis Café serves Asian cuisine. Don’t miss the Lövö nature trail and visit Vårdö Church, built in the 1400s.
For the adventurous, Sandösund Resort is a must-visit, offering Flowpark Åland adventure course and kayaking, but also a relaxing floating sauna and a taverna.
Culinary experiences
Delightful culinary experiences await at restaurant Kallas SkärGård, housed in an old barn. Here you can enjoy seafood and fish meals, the specialities of the house, in a verdant and colourful garden. Another favorite spot is the quaint Hamnmagasinet in Vargata, with a café and bistro by the marina, next to a small sandy beach and a diving platform.
