The guide Leif Höglund from S.G.U Friluftsentreprenörerna explains why you should choose Åland for your long-distance skating adventure:
“We have great access to ice, as inland lakes, sea bays and outer sea ice settles at different times”, he says. “In other words – there is often access to new and smooth ice. In many other places you are forced to skate on plowed tracks while we often have naturally snow-free ice to skate on, ice which gives you the freedom to skate wherever you want.”
What is so special with skating in Åland?
“Åland has become known in the Nordic countries because of its lasting sea ice. Since we have so much sea around us, the ice settles a little later in the beginning of the season, but in spring it lasts longer and the sea cools it down instead, which makes Åland a large ‘thermos’. We often get really good skating in early spring when the ice melts in other places. There is especially good spring ice around the islands Kökar and Vårdö.”
Where in Åland are the best skating areas found?
“Ice is a living material and ice which is unusable today can be excellent tomorrow and the other way around. In the early season Markusbölefjärden in Finström and Kyrksundet in Sund are great. Later we have Bambölevik, Ivarsfjärden, Slottsundet, the inner archipelago and sometimes even the outer archipelago.”
