Titte’s garden offers variety

It is large and diversified. The many eye-catchers evoke an almost magical feeling. Or just pure happiness. How you perceive a garden is very personal.
Titte Törnroth-Sarkkinen’s garden is open for both groups and individuals in summertime.

Norrgården’s garden
Norrgården in Västeränga, in the municipality of Lemland, with a house from the 1800’s, was originally a farm. When Titte Törnroth-Sarkkinen bought the property in 1986, the garden was mainly a 6.500 m2 large lawn.

At the time Titte was a film director in Stockholm, worked a lot and did not have any interest in the garden. “At the turn of the millennium I was burnt out. After that I discovered that the soil and the garden environment felt like a magnet to me. I felt good when I was near it”, says Titte Törnroth-Sarkkinen.

She left the movie business and from 2002 onwards she’s been seriously working on the garden at Norrgården.

Presently only about one third of the lawn is left. The rest are plantings, borders, shrubs, ground covers, climbers, gravelled paths, stone paving, etc.

There are also rarities that really should not be able to grow in this climate zone, for example Gunnera and Ginkgo.

The garden is not uniform in one style, but consists of small corners and rooms where Titte’s inspiration during different years is evident. “I am just as interested in leaves, structures and shapes as in flowers”, says Titte.

Garden tourism
Today Titte Törnrith-Sarkkinen works as a journalist. Her husband Seppo Sarkkinen, who also has a new found interest in gardening, works as a photographer. They take care of their garden  during their leisure time.

Last year was the first year they welcomed groups. This year they will expand their garden tourism to also include individual visitors.

Groups who want to visit Titte’s garden must make advance reservations by calling +358 18 35432. Individual visitors are welcome in summertime, call for information or contact Åland Tourist Information for visiting-hours. The price is 5 Euro per person.

Groups who visit the garden will be guided by Titte.
